Your lifestyle plays a big part in how well your joints repair after a flare-ups. Exercise, sleep and healthy lifestyle changes can support and strengthen the joint to aid recovery.

From running and swimming to a gentle walk in the park keeping active will increase strength and flexibility.

Stretching

Keeping muscles engaged through a morning or evening stretch is important to improve your range of motion.

Physio

See a physio who will work with you to manage your pain, decrease stiffness and improve muscle strength.

Improve sleep

A lack of sleep can increase your sensitivity to pain. Improve the duration of your sleep by finding the position that provides most relief. A warm bath before bed can help relax the joints and muscles.

Yoga

As well as being great for the mind, the movements in yoga allow inflamed and painful joints to glide easily over one another, increasing movement and strength will help to reduce joint pain.

Pace yourself

It’s important to listen to your own body. Pushing yourself to complete a task can lead to increased pain and inflammation, which can also cause reduced muscle stamina.

Weight loss

Losing excess weight will help reduce the pressure on your joints, particularly in hips, knees and feet.

Correct posture

Muscle and ligament imbalances resulting from poor posture can cause joint pain. Be aware of the position you sit or stand in and take regular breaks to loosen up.

Balanced diet

Enjoy a Mediterranean-style diet with fruit and veg, oily fish, nuts, seeds, olive oil. Avoid processed foods loaded with sugar and unhealthy fats,which are linked with inflammation. Limit alcohol consumption.
